ADA Accessible Commercial Playgrounds
Here at Play Outdoors Texas, we know that children love play, including children with disabilities. Every child deserves the opportunity to engage and enjoy their time on a playground. A commercial playground that meets ADA compliance ensures that children with disabilities have the same opportunities for play as their peers without disabilities.
According to ADA, an accessible commercial playground offers a range of play experiences to children with varying abilities. There must be:
- An accessible path from the building or parking lot to the edge of the play area.
- An accessible path from the edge of the play area to the play equipment.
- Surfacing that complies with ASTM 1951 (Determination of Accessibility of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment).
Providing ADA Accessible commercial playgrounds is of high importance for Play Outdoors Texas. Accessible commercial playgrounds create community by providing spaces where children of all abilities can interact, play, and develop friendships. This contributes to a more inclusive and supportive community environment. By playing together, children can develop understanding and respect for individuals with different abilities. Accessible commercial playgrounds offer opportunities for children to learn about diversity, empathy, and inclusivity from an early age.
Recently our commercial playground manufacturer, Swing Kingdom, recently shared a commercial playground that is 100% wheelchair accessible. This playground was designed specifically with this capability in mind. Below are pictures of the design process and then the completed commercial playground.
